SPEAKERS

About

We would like to invite you to our next tax seminar on April 18th (11:00 – 12:00 CET) with Ragnar Torvik. He will present “Recommendations from the Norwegian Expert Committee on Tax Reform”. The committee – chaired by Professor Torvik – proposes extensive changes to reform the Norwegian tax system. Improvements to the tax system are a key aspect of economic policy, and one of the most important instruments for increasing productivity, promoting sustainable economic growth, and in certain contexts reducing the burden on taxpayers. The seminar is relevant for anyone who is interested in learning more about contemporary tax reform and tax modernization efforts.

The event will be held at Bergen Global and is open to everyone. No registration is required.

Speakers

Ragnar Torvik is Professor at the Department of Economics, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and Adjunct Professor at BI Norwegian Business School. During the period 2014-19 he was Associated Senior Researcher at Chr. Michelsen Institute. Ragnar’s main research interests are political economy, petroleum economics and macroeconomics. His research has contributed to shed light on why some oil-rich countries have succeeded while others have not, and informed the design of policies to ensure that natural resource abundance contributes to favorable economic and political development. His recent work investigates why political elites in some countries strategically opt for a non-centralized state and, thus, why state capacity is kept continually low in many societies due to political economic causes.

Torvik has been a member of several public committees in Norway, including the Capital Flight Committee and the Climate Risk Committee. Recently, he chaired the Norwegian Expert Committee on Tax Reform. Ragnar’s research is published in leading academic journals such as Journal of Public Economics, The Economic Journal, American Economic Review P&P, Review of Economic Studies, Journal of the European Economic Association, Journal of Development Economics, European Economic Review, Journal of Peace Research, Journal of Conflict Resolution, and Journal of African Economies.
